Giganotosaurus is a genus of large theropod dinosaur that lived during the early Cenomanian stage of the Late Cretaceous period approximately 99.6 to 97 million years ago.
Its name means giant southern lizard as it was discovered in Argentina South America.
Giganotosaurus is one of the largest known carnivorous dinosaurs reaching lengths of up to 12.2 to 13.2 meters 40 to 43 feet and estimated to weigh up to 8000 to 15000 kg 17600 to 33100 lb.
Its skull was long and narrow and its teeth were serrated and curved which would have allowed it to inflict deep and devastating wounds on its prey. Despite its large size Giganotosaurus was probably not as heavily built as other large theropods such as Tyrannosaurus rex.
Instead it had long slender legs that made it a fast runner and its light build allowed it to pursue and hunt large sauropod dinosaurs.
Its fossils have been found in the same rock formation as another giant theropod Mapusaurus which suggests that the two may have been competing for the same resources.
