This has been a quite interesting adventure of me trying to find any pre-release builds of Windows NT 3.5.
Firstly Windows NT 3.5 Build 612 and Windows NT 3.5 Build 683 both Workstation and Server SKUs had to be booted from a bootdisk because they are not bootable.
So I grabbed a Windows 95A bootdisk and proceeded to run fdisk and format C but after it was complete and I ran winnt it wanted me to provide 3 blank floppy disks.
So I went to the IA and found a blank 1.44MB floppy disk and made 3 copies of it only to discover that setup was unable to format the disks nor could I do so manually making installation impossible.
The same situation applies to Windows NT Workstation 3.5 Build 756 and Windows NT 3.5 Build 782 in both SKUs.
However Windows NT Server 3.5 build 756 booted but when reaching the second phase of setup complains about not being able to install on the current processor even with VMWares hardware virtualization for processors enabled making it once again impossible to install the build.
I could not find the Retail version of Windows NT 3.5 Workstation or Server anywhere although I found the PowerPC version which would not run on an x86 emulator like VirtualBox VMWare or Virtual PC.
The only copy of Windows NT 3.5 Service Pack 1 I found was an update installer for an already preinstalled copy of the retail version.
I could not find Service Pack 2 anywhere.
I found a preinstalled copy of Windows NT Workstation 3.5 Service Pack 3 in the form of a vmdk file so that is the only one I was able to get for Windows NT 3.5.
Character Map got unicode support Notepad now has an option to change the system font and Cardfile has had some minor options added to the edit menu.
Winver now redirects to the Windows 11 counterpart whereas userinit.exe now throws up an error.
Paintbrush is significantly bugged though it does now have a true color palette.
The NTBackup utility now crashes with an error.
While the Control Panel itself crashes almost instantly in this build the Windows NT 3.5 styled Cursors and Color Control Panel applets now open.
The ODBC data sources for Windows NT 3.5 opens in this build although its Control Panel applet is redirected to the Windows 11 64-Bit counterpart.
Cue Cards is unable to launch.
Some new screensavers are included but they are unable to start.
