If youre enjoying the tips in this series make sure to subscribe to the MrExcel XL playlist where I will be podcasting the entire book. Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you need to make a copy of a worksheet for the next month or quarter? In the past I used to insert a new worksheet copy all the cells and then try to get all the settings right.
But then a colleague from my previous job showed me a much faster way - right-click on the tab and choose Move or Copy.
This was a game-changer for me but little did I know there was an even faster way. The real time-saver comes from using the CTRL key and dragging the worksheet to the right.
This will create a copy of the worksheet with just a few clicks.
And the best part? You can do this for multiple worksheets at once.
Just select the worksheets you want to copy hold down the CTRL key and drag the first worksheet to the right.
This will create copies of all the selected worksheets in one go. Now I have a little rant about a feature that Ive been wanting in Excel for years.
We all know that if you type January in a cell and drag the fill handle Excel will automatically fill in the following months.
So why cant we have the same feature when copying worksheets? Ive even submitted this idea to the Excel team 10 years ago but it still hasnt been implemented.
Thats why Ive created a new idea on Excel.UserVoice.com - Fill Handle For Worksheet Copy.
If you think this would be a great addition to Excel please go and vote for it using the short link mrx.clsheetautofill. But wait theres more! In a previous podcast episode I shared a VBA macro that can automatically rename worksheets based on a custom list.
So not only can we have the months automatically filled in but we can also have the worksheets renamed with just a few lines of code.
If youre not familiar with VBA dont worry Ive included the link to that episode in the description below.
And who knows maybe someone from the Excel team will see this and implement it in a future update. And finally if youre enjoying these tips and want to save even more time you can purchase the MrExcel XL book for just 25.
This book contains over 40 Excel tips along with cartoons cocktails tweets and jokes.
Just click on the i in the top-right corner to get your copy.
And dont forget to tune in every day in August for a new tip from the book. To recap in todays episode we learned how to quickly copy worksheets in Excel using the right-click method and the CTRL-drag method.
We also discussed my user voice idea for a fill handle feature for worksheet copy and the VBA macro that can automatically rename worksheets.
