How to interpret the values provided by a particle size analyser in particular the median mean and surface area per unit volume diameters that may be quoted as the average diameter of the distribution.
The D10 and D90 are also discussed.
The printout was taken from a laser diffraction device supplied by Malvern Instruments UK.
It is quite an old printout but the data interpretation is still valid.
The data is used in the Fundamentals of Particle Technology book as an example of particle sizing and a manual calculation of the mean diameter and Sauter mean diameter are provided in a spreadsheet at www.particles.org to confirm the values presented here.
