Adventure Island 4 bears more of a semblance to such ambitious platformers as Metroid or Blaster Master than any of the earlier games in the series.
The environment scrolls freely in all directions with no explicitly separated stages.
Nonetheless its pretty easy to figure out where to go - defeating one boss will open the path to the next boss and so on.
Along the way there are various useful items to be collected including not only familiar items like the boomerang and skateboard but also new weapons like the water gun and new modes of transportation like the snowboard - all of which can be kept and selected at any time.
Higgins can now take more than one hit too and there are some cleverly placed heart containers to be found that will extend the life meter.
