Sudanese Ambassador Al-Harith Idriss Al-Harith Mohamed stressed that his government is committed to cooperating with the United Nations UN especially the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs OCHA to facilitate humanitarian access to those in need in the region.
The government of Sudan is keen on addressing the humanitarian situation triggered by the war the Ambassador said.
The UN especially OCHA should cooperate and coordinate with the affected country in the spirit of collaboration and cooperation according to their priorities assessed by the affected countries he stressed.
He said this cooperation should include all priorities including the geographical scope of a distribution of aid according to a General Assembly Resolution 18264.
Previously US Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield stated that while we were grateful for the ASGs participation we had expected that Mr.
Volker Perthes UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Sudan was going to brief the Council.
We now know that the Sudanese government threatened to end the UN Mission in Sudan if Perthes participated in this briefing.
And that was outrageous and I did make that point in the Council.
No country should be able to bully a briefer into silence let alone the United Nations she said.
In response the Sudanese Ambassador declared that Sudan supports the work of the United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan UNITAMS.
He said Sudan is not bargaining by threats or anything.
We are not in a position of threat.
Multilateral relations do not require threats.
We believe in the new roadmap that His Excellency the Secretary-General has unleashed regarding the New Peace Agenda and we committed by them he concluded.
On 9 June Sudan declared Perthes Head of UNITAMS persona non grata.
