On April 21 the Valdai Club hosted an expert discussion titled Shipping Blockade in the Strait of Hormuz: Consequences and Future Scenarios.
The blocking of the Strait of Hormuz was one of the most significant consequences of the US and Israeli military operation against Iran.
Despite heavy losses Iran managed to block maritime traffic in the Persian Gulf.
The main impact fell on oil cargo.
Approximately 20 of global oil flows passed through the Persian Gulf.
This resulted in rising prices for oil petroleum products and liquefied natural gas.
Despite enormous military pressure the US was unable to achieve complete control of the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran announced new rules for ship passage implying fee-based and permit-based transit.
New conditions for the use of the strait are emerging which could become reality in other geographic locations in the future.
Which scenario seems most likely today? What are the prospects for shipping returning to its pre-war status quo? How might the roles of Iran and the United States in the Persian Gulf change? How will the current conflict impact global trade in the future? The participants in the discussion will attempt to answer these and other questions.
