Granada is the capital of the homonymous province in the autonomous community of Andalusia.
It is located in the central part of the Vega de Granada region by the Genil river and by the foothills of the highest massif of the Iberian Peninsula Sierra Nevada which determines its climate.
Muslim Granada was the capital of the Zirí kingdom of Granada during the 11th century and of the Nasrid kingdom of Granada between the 13th and 15th centuries.
After the capture of the city by the Catholic Monarchs it remained the capital of the Castilian kingdom of Granada which was already a simple territorial jurisdiction and which was maintained until 1833 when a new provincial division was produced in Spain which is still in force.
Its municipal coat of arms bears the titles of Very noble loyal named great famous and heroic city of Granada.
Granada is a city that receives more than 2 million visitors per year including national and international thanks to its extensive artistic-monumental cultural and ethnological heritage including its Spring Festivals Holy Week and Corpus Christi.
