Tekirdağ previously Rodosto is a city in European Turkey on the Marmara Sea.
It was probably built in the 7th century BCE as a Greek village called Bisanthe but when it became the capital of Thrace in the 1st century BCE it was renamed Rhaedestus.
The Ottoman Turks conquered it in the second part of the 14th century and it was afterwards held by Russia 1877-78 Bulgaria 1912 and Greece 1920-22.
It was the harbour for the Adrianople modern Edirne area for centuries but it collapsed after Alexandroupolis Dedeaaç now in Greece on the Aegean Sea became the terminal of the railway up the Maritsa River in 1896. The Rüstem Paşa Cami mosque and the Bedestan covered market both credited to the 16th-century Ottoman architect Sinan are among the citys ancient structures.
