Isle of Marken the Netherlands

Marken used to be a small island community in the Dutch Zuyder Zee.
In the old days the island was flooded regularly.
The people of Marken armed themselves against the water by building their dwellings on stilts and on mounds here called werfs.
In 1932 the Afsluitdijk was completed and the Zuyder Zee became IJsselmeer a freshwater lake. Marken is a tourist attraction for its dark green painted houses on the dike the traditional costumes the old harbour and for Sijtje Boes a lady-resident who started a business of selling souvenirs in the early 1900s.
Her house is open for tours and is still a souvenir shop.
Unfortunately Marken is no longer an island.
Since 1957 it is connected to the mainland by means of a two kilometer long dike.
