Hyatts invention initially intended as a substitute for ivory in billiard balls marked the first practical use of plastic and paved the way for future innovations. However the true revolution in plastics came with Leo Baekelands invention of Bakelite in 1907.
Bakelite was the first fully synthetic non-flammable plastic marking a significant advancement in materials science.
