Giant Onion - From Bud to Flowers to Seeds

Giant Onion is a garden variety of the Allium group.
It grows from a bulb and has a ball-headed flower cluster.
The Alliums are usually edible have a characteristic smell and flowers that are insect pollinated.
They are monocotyledons with a seed that has a single leaf when it germinates and the veins run parallel rather than branching like the Dicotyledon group.
Some species are native to the UK and rare others are very common like the Ramsoms Garlic or Wild Garlic.
Some garden escapes species like the Few-flowered Leek are highly invasive and have bulbils on the flower head.
