Camerata Ama Deus Paul Futer trumpet Valentin Radu conductor VIVALDI Concerto for Trumpet in D Major RV 230 from Lestro armonico Op.39 1711 In 1711 Vivaldi published a set of 12 violin concertos he called Lestro armonico Harmonic Inspiration which became his Op.
3.
It was an instant success across Europe and propelled Vivaldi to international fame.
As presented by Roger the twelve concertos in Lestro armonico are organized in four groups of three concertos each group having one concerto for four violins one for two violins and one for a solo violin.
Over time many arrangements for other instruments were made of this popular music the most important being the six transcriptions by J.
S.
Bach including the ninth of the set tonights Concerto in D Major RV 230 transcribed by Bach into his Harpsichord Concerto BWV 972.
As with almost all Baroque composers Vivaldi fell out of fashion after his death.
It was Bachs interest in Vivaldi and particularly in the concertos of Lestro armonico that helped spur the Vivaldi revival in the early twentieth century. As in the Baroque era where substitution of instruments was common practice the Concerto in D Major RV 230 originally written for violin is being played tonight on the trumpet.
This particular substitution means that the trumpet is pushed to the limit of its possibilities since violin writing can allow for sustained phrases with no pause for breath expansive registers wide leaps and ornamentationall of which are much more difficult or impossible to perform on the trumpet. The first movement of the Concerto No.
9 in D Major has fast-moving and spirited sections by the trumpet against the full orchestra interspersed with challenging passages for the trumpet accompanied only by the continuo.
The Adagio begins with surging strings giving way to an improvisational passage by the soloist against a sustained repetitive string accompaniment.
In the buoyant final Allegro rhythmic strings accompany a highly virtuosic passage by the trumpet.
