Violinist or violist Looking for a good warm up but dont have a lot of time? No? Telling you anyway : While I was doodling around one day I came up with this exercise that helped me and I think it might be of use to other people too.
Basically theyre half step double stops.
1.
Bottom string OPEN top string 3RD FINGER suggested
2.
SLURRING notes together and keeping the top note STILL move the bottom note up and down by HALF STEPS
3.
REPEAT at least FIVE times or however many times you think you need to
4.feel free to repeat this routine ALTERNATING fingers on the TOP STRING ex.
1st time C on g string 2nd time B natural 3rd time B flat 4th time A etc.
i hope that made sense
The exercise achieves:
1.
Dexterity
2.
Familiarity and tone on the c string lord knows we need that
3.
Flexibility
The exercise requires:
1.
Intonation
2.
Relaxed thumb grip and palm
So when I was practicing etudes 1 and 2 from Brunis 25 etudes for viola I found it really hard to play double stops and place my fingers down before playing certain intervals.
I think this warm up and quick and easy and while it doesnt compare to actual extensive practice it can come in handy.
After running thru the exercise two or three times my hand and fingers feel ready to take on the world.
All my violists and violinists out there hopefully youll see this and it can help you in some way.
Especially violists
idk about yall but warming up can be so tedious for me sometimes.
Im always eager to find new ways to better my technique make my life easier and all that jazz.
The longer Ive been playing I realize more and more that a good smart planned out warm up routine is the smallest difference between playing okay and an the best performance ever.
Since it helped me so much I thought it was too cool not to share
