This is a collaborative project between students of Temecula Valley Youth Symphony and adult musicians from Southland Symphony Orchestra with additional musicians from Temecula Valley Symphony.
Here is a note from Dr.
Sylvia Lee Mann re: the projects creative process:
I have been asked to share some insight into the process of creating our Virtual performance videos focusing on the St.
Georges Symphony Opus 11 No.2.
This was a challenging piece for our students it was written by Joseph Bologne Chevalier de St.
Charles.
Here is some Wikipedia info about the composer: Joseph Bologne Chevalier de Saint-Georges December 25 1745 June 12 1799 was a champion fencer classical composer virtuoso violinist and conductor of the leading symphony orchestra in Paris.
Born in the French colony of Guadeloupe he was the son of George Bolognede Saint-Georges a wealthy married planter and Anne dite Nanon his wifes African slave.2
His father took him to France when he was young and he was educated there also becoming a
champion fencer.
During the French Revolution the younger Saint-Georges served as a colonel
of the Légion St.-Georges3 the first all-black regiment in Europe.
He fought on the side of the
Republic.
Today the Chevalier de Saint-Georges is best remembered as the first known classical
composer who was of African ancestry he composed numerous string quartets and other
instrumental music and opera.
Wikipedia link:
The piece included some challenging technical passages it would be considered a challenge at any level but rewarding to play!
Here is how we made our virtual performance happen:
In general I want you to understand that when any instructoreducatordirector etc.
decides to do
this we are taking on the roles of an arranger producer audio engineer video editor as well as dealing with logistics and troubleshooting for students and other participating musicians.
