We test the new 2022 Mazda BT-50 1.9 XS to see what this base ute is like.

The Mazda BT-50 now has a more affordable base model using a 1.9-litre turbo diesel four-cylinder engine making 110kW of power 147 hp and 350Nm of torque 258 lb ft.
That compares to 140kW450Nm in the bigger 3.0-litre engine.
The 1.9-litre is only available in one trim of BT-50 which is the new steel-wheeled BT-50 XS.
In todays episode fo Chasing Cars editor Tom Baker checks out the cheapest BT-50 grade which is designed to compete with the Toyota Hilux Workmate Ford Ranger XL Volkswagen Amarok Core and other entry-level pick-up utes.
The BT-50 XS is available in single cab-chassis double-cab 4x2 and double-cab 4x4 varieties with the 4x2 dual-cab tested here.
