Signet Red wRed interior 283290hp 4-speed manual transmission. In the lexicon of classic automobiles the Corvette is considered by most an icon.
It pretty much became one in 55 when engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov placed a small block V-8 between the frame rails under the hood.
Since then various bumps in the road notwithstanding the performance and engineering of Corvette have continued to evolve to the point where the forthcoming ZR1 will produce 750hp! The most powerful Corvette ever built! But looking back over the decades there are certain year Corvettes that just seem to shine a bit brighter than some others.
One of those is the 58.
The 58 was a milestone Corvette for a number of reasons.
It was longer wider and roomier than its predecessor.
It featured quad headlights for the first time.
And because 58 was the peak of the Gingerbread era the Corvette had to have its share.
So along with the big toothed chrome teeth in the grille two chrome spears adorned the trunk along with a simulated louvered hood.
It embodied everything we loved about the 50s! As the era came to a close maybe it all was just too much of a good thing because the general public wasnt that taken with all of the stuff.
As a result the following year the trunk spears and louvered hood were gone.
But as often happens time has a way of making certain missteps look like excellent ideas.
In hindsight now the 58 Corvette is considered one of the most coveted and collectible Corvettes ever designed! And what was the ultimate 58 Corvette .
